Requirements
  • Qualification by experience, training, and professional competence in fire service and safety as required by Montana law and administrative rules.
  • A degree in fire-protection engineering or a related field from a recognized institution of higher education and two years of experience in fire protection, or ICC Fire Inspector I or Fire Inspector II certification.
  • Knowledge of relevant Montana Code Annotated provisions, National Fire Protection Association fire codes, fire behavior in structures, automobiles, and wildlands, firefighting techniques, and the behavior of electricity, liquefied petroleum gas, and natural gas as they relate to fire.
  • Knowledge of specialized investigative devices and equipment, interview and investigative methods, criminal investigation procedures, evidence collection and preservation, and legal proceedings relating to arson prosecution.
  • Knowledge of fire and life safety inspection standards, building codes, building construction processes and practices, fire alarm systems, smoke detection systems, automatic extinguishing systems, and blueprint interpretation.
  • Ability to use fire investigation, inspection, training, office, computer, fire-related, and personal protection equipment.
  • Ability to operate a four-wheel-drive standard-shift vehicle in off-road conditions.
  • Successful completion of a criminal history fingerprint check, intensive background check, and driving history check.

Responsibilities
  • Perform professional fire investigations and building inspections to enforce Montana fire-safety laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Support the goals and objectives of the Fire Prevention and Investigation Section.
  • Communicate through prepared letters, telephone, and personal discussions with the general public, building industry, law enforcement, fire service agencies, and local, state, and federal government officials.
  • Conduct fire investigations to determine the origin and cause of fires.
  • Assist with adoption of fire-safety regulations, inspection of public buildings, establishment and promotion of fire-prevention programs, approval of local inspection programs, and investigation of fires.
  • Maintain records of fires occurring within Montana.
  • Provide training to local public-safety agencies and assist with homeland-security training and planning.
  • Direct heavy-equipment operators to remove large structural assemblies and assist with rigging chains and cables in appropriate locations.
  • Conduct interviews using voice recorders and transcription equipment.
  • Use inspection equipment such as a volt-ohmmeter multitester, electric circuit tester, pitot tube, and canned smoke.
  • Use training and education equipment, including video cameras, video cassette recorders, overhead projectors, and PowerPoint projectors.
